Half the Planet is Unbanked

As hard as it is to imagine, 50 percent of adults worldwide are considered “unbanked” – meaning they do not have a formal banking relationship. The World Bank states that 59 percent of adults in developing economies are unbanked, while 67 percent of adults in South Asia are unbanked (versus 45 percent in East Asia). According to the Reserve Bank of India, 74,000 villages there with populations over 2,000 were unbanked as of 2010.
